GROUNDBREAKERS

People make the construction industry what it is today. GroundBreak Carolinas is excited to share the story of our final member of the inaugural class of GroundBreakers – individuals who are shaping our industry in a variety of ways. The featured GroundBreaker this issue is Bill Neely.
Steadfast, loyal to those who do right, focused, friend, above board, universally respected – all words shared by colleagues about Bill Neely, CEO of M. B. Kahn Construction Co., Inc. The Clemson University graduate joined M. B. Kahn in 1972 as a field engineer. He rose through the ranks to become President in 1993 and CEO in 1996. At every step, Neely has been resolute in his mission to build more than just buildings for the company’s hundreds of repeat clients. His honesty and hands-on approach have led to many long-term relationships with clients, teaming partners, and subcontractors over the years.

Enterprise performance management (EPM) is a platform meant to improve overall operations of an organization, seeking to enhance overall data and infrastructure in order to improve performance through the use of analytics. The use of such analytics has the potential to increase speed of identifying business issues and drivers, as well as develop better change-agility. In this article, we summarize what EPM actually is and how it can similarly help your organization improve its operational functions.
If you had told me 20-plus years ago when I was in high school that I would have a career in construction, I would have never believed you.  From the time I was very young, I wanted to be a teacher.  As I grew up, my purpose became more focused. I wanted to teach high school English. With my major selected, I set forth towards that goal.
Over and over again I hear about the construction workforce shortage. I hear about it in the office. I hear about it during meetings with commercial real estate developers. I hear about it on project site visits. I turn on the news and hear that the industry is going to take a hit and that everyone is concerned. But I’m not. I’m optimistic because during my 30 years in construction, I’ve talked to many seasoned pros, who, like myself, are inspired by this industry every day.

We’ve all heard the saying, "Employees don’t leave jobs; they leave managers." But the truth is, the issue isn’t that simple. There are many reasons why employees are compelled to leave a job, and a manager isn’t always to blame. So what are some of the most common reasons that employees leave a company, and what can managers do to prevent turnover?

As I travel around the country visiting clients to discuss marketing plans, a common tactic that is presented is videos, specifically short format (less than four minutes). Many want to ramp up their existing video efforts, while others simply want to start, yet are nervous. Although the stats have been shared in this space numerous times before to validate the necessity of incorporating video, I recognize that it can be a daunting task.
Acclaimed speaker and sought-after media resource Sarah Susanka will be the AIA South Atlantic Region ASPIRE Conference evening keynote speaker on Monday April, 15. Susanka is known for her book and presentations about The Not So Big Life, where she uses the same set of ideas to demonstrate that we can feel "at home" in our lives only when what we do follows who we truly are. Sarah reveals the process of changing the way we live by being in each moment of our lives fully and by being present in whatever is happening.

One of the things that I value most about being a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) is that membership is a value-added investment of time and money. Networking is key. Attending the Fall meeting is a privilege. Participating in ULI SC (statewide and local) and ULI Carolinas conferences, programs and exclusive tours makes it real and personal. And having a literal world of knowledge and research at my fingertips at any given time is pretty awesome. At a time when value engineering may have the upper hand in many of our projects, ULI membership is always about adding value to our practices and projects, how we work and to how we impact our communities
