Michael and Robyn Nieri are laying a foundation for student success at Clemson University. As the University’s fifth Cornerstone Partner for Athletics, they created the Nieri Family Student-Athlete Enrichment Center. Now, the Nieri legacy at Clemson will expand even further as they become the University’s fifth Academic Cornerstone Partner with a gift of $5 million to the Department of Construction Science and Management (CSM) in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities. It is the largest gift to both the department and the college.

Prolonged economic expansion, a near 50-year low unemployment rate, and a 40 percent increase in non-residential construction spending over the last several years has led to an increase in compensation for architects. Pay for architectural staff positions has risen by more than six percent per year since early 2017, according to the 2019 AIA Compensation Survey.

The USGBC released a new report, LEED in Motion: Retail, showing the prevalence of LEED certification in retail spaces around the world. LEED is used in more than 12,500 retail locations globally, allowing major brands like TD Bank, Starbucks, 7-Eleven and more to demonstrate achievement of ESG goals to their investors, customers and other stakeholders.

The National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) recently announced awards to recognize projects conducted by groups in North Carolina, including several innovative efforts by workforce development boards that are affiliated with regional councils of governments (COGs).
 
The National Safety Council (NSC) made specific asks of the American business community and unveiled a new toolkit that employers can use to address the opioid crisis. NSC called on all employers to equip their workplace first aid kits with naloxone, an overdose reversal drug, provide supervisor education around opioid misuse and include access to treatment options in their Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) – all elements of a robust drug-free workplace policy.

Construction input prices fell 0.6% in August and are down 0.9% year over year, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors Analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Producer Price Index data released today. Nonresidential construction input prices fell 0.4% for the month and are down 0.4% compared to August 2018.
