Just like any student whose major isn’t construction related, I had no idea what I was getting into when it came to taking this internship. But to my surprise… it isn’t all hard hats and hammers around this place, although I am looking forward to getting real "hands on" construction experience. I learned quickly that the heart of the commercial construction industry is based on a tight-knit family approach to creating functional work spaces. The construction industry is full of people that love working together toward a common goal.

As business technologies grow across all industries and younger, more data-informed professionals enter the construction workspace, contractors are diving deeper into their data by deploying business intelligence solutions in construction that fuel real-time analytics.

When we talk about the importance of a business’s culture, we tend to think about those things that make a workplace a good investment for the people who work there. Significant donations of time and material from the local construction community, supplemented by private monetary donations, has made a dream come true for Piedmont Women's Center in Greenville, S.C. The faith-based organization now has a modern facility five times larger than its previous clinic thanks to the in-kind contributions of architects, engineering firms, general contractors, specialty trade contractors, and material suppliers.
 
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Palmetto Chapter of South Carolina #385, the newest chapter in the South Atlantic Region of NAWIC, had a great showing at the Region’s Spring Forum in Charlotte.


CarolinaPower’s Richie Seely and Branden Panausuia placed in the 2019 Apprenticeship Skills Competition hosted this spring by Charleston’s Trident Technical College. Seely took second place in the First-Year Apprentices division while Punausuia came in third among Second-Year Apprentices. The 2019 Apprenticeship Skills competition was part of the annual Electricians Fair and Career Day jointly sponsored by the Charleston Electrical Contractors Association (CECA), Careers Cluster Partnership-Construction Trades (CCP), and Trident Workforce Investment Board (TWIB).

 
Associated Builders and Contractors released its 2019 Safety Performance Report, an annual assessment that furthers the construction industry’s understanding of how to achieve world-class safety through its STEP Safety Management System. The report documents the dramatic impact of using proactive safety practices to reduce recordable incidents by up to 85%, making the best-performing companies 680% safer than the industry average.

In January 2017, Laura Lee joined the EDPNC to fill a new position focused on recruiting food and beverage manufacturing operations, particularly value-added processors using local crops in their final product. "We grow over 80 commodities, and a large percentage of what is grown in North Carolina is shipped out of the state to be further processed," Lee said. "We have a tremendous opportunity to further process more of what is grown throughout North Carolina."
