Making the Move from Military to Industry

I'll admit, I'm in awe of the range of skills our veterans are learning in the military—from pipefitting to heavy equipment operation—and the connection to our industry. It seems like it would be a natural transition from the military to industry but it can be complicated. Terminology in skill levels and jobs are just a few of the differences encountered. For example, while industry uses credentials to indicate skill levels, the military uses Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) codes, Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) and Navy Seabee rates to designate a specific job.

A fixture the in the Carolinas, Dr. Bruce Yandle released his quarterly  Economic Situation Report.Yandle prospects for 2018 were positive. "These can be summarized in a simple statement: if you felt good about 2017, you should look forward to 2018," he wrote. "In other words, don’t expect to see major changes in the nation’s basic economic indicators. I do not expect policy or other changes to meaningfully affect labor productivity or the size of the workforce."
 
Providing more evidence of a strengthening economy, Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) Construction Backlog Indicator (CBI) set a record as it expanded to 9.45 months during the third quarter of 2017, up 9.8 percent from the second quarter to the longest backlog reading in the eight-year history of the series. CBI is up by 0.8 months, or 9.2 percent, on a year-over-year basis.
 
What You Need to Know About Tax Reform
Congress has continued to make dramatic progress in approving an historic tax reform, with the Senate now joining the House in having approved separate versions of tax reform legislation. The effort to enact a reform of U.S. tax law providing a more competitive tax system for business taxpayers and improved economic opportunities for individuals and families is now entering a critical final phase.  
 
The majority of commercial and industrial contractors are confident about sales growth, profits and staffing levels heading into 2018, according to the latest Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Construction Confidence Index (CCI). Despite rising construction labor and materials costs, 55 percent of contractors expect their profit margins to expand in the first half of 2018.
The South Carolina Economic Developers Association (SCEDA), a statewide organization whose primary objective is to increase the effectiveness of individuals involved in the practice of economic development in South Carolina by encouraging cooperation, exchange of information, and promotion of professional skills, announced 56 new members.
 
Coworking, the style of work marked by open shared spaces among workers of different companies and popularized by “solopreneurs” and tech workers, is quickly being embraced by those who manage real estate needs for large corporations.The trend is explored in a new whitepaper, The Evolution of Co-working and Impact on CRE, released by CoreNet Global, the association for corporate real estate professionals.
 
The logistics industry cluster is one of the largest in South Carolina according to a study released by the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness. Authored by Dr. Joseph Von Nessen, the study finds that there are more than 600 logistics companies operating in the state, from transportation, to air freight providers, to warehouse and distribution centers.
North Carolina is now the nation’s top state to do business, according to Forbes’ high-profile Best States for Business ranking. While North Carolina is the only state to appear among the top five states for 12 straight years since the magazine launched the list, this year is the first time the state has occupied the top spot. Forbes ranked North Carolina No. 2 last year.
