According to recent statistical data, due to the booming economy in the U.S., there are more job openings in construction than there are people to fill those jobs. In addition, more people are leaving their jobs than ever before. The evidence is clear -- keeping your best employees has become more important than ever, but also equally as difficult. In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins wrote: "…start by getting the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats." Building the right team is integral to the success of your business, but if you don’t know how to keep that team in place, the effort is pointless.

It’s 2020.  And businesses are striving to increase efficiency at every level of the enterprise. In the construction industry, as a trade contractor, with the right scope and design, you can take your team, and operate the project in a way that produces the best work for the owner and client. Over the years, technology has been invented and developed to help construction operations and other departments improve overall efficiency. However, many contractors fall for shiny applications and tools that simply don’t measure up and create data silos.  They have also been reluctant to develop an internal technology roadmap to support and measure improvement – this is typically outside their comfort zone, to commit to implementing modern technology.

National nonresidential construction spending declined 0.3% in November but is up 5.1% year over year, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data published today by the U.S. Census Bureau. On a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, spending totaled $781.1 billion, 1.8% lower than the cyclical peak in April 2019.

Association officials noted that its recent survey found most contractors are optimistic about the dollar value of projects available and expect to keep adding workers in 2020 but they are finding it hard to fill positions and anticipate it will continue to be hard to hire employees.
