What are your thoughts on the Carolinas' Construction economy in 2019?
We are very optimistic at Carolinas AGC that 2019 will be another solid year for construction in the Carolinas in the building, highway-heavy and utility markets. We are doing everything we can, through our Carolinas AGC Build Your Career workforce development program, to bring focus on the thousands of great, well-paying jobs careers that are out there now throughout North and South Carolina.

What are your thoughts on the Carolina Construction economy in 2019?
The Carolinas' construction economy for 2019 looks strong and robust. The ongoing threat of tariffs could play into the equation for the new year. Even if tariffs do a become a component of the business landscape, I am hopeful that the major impact of these policy changes will not be a major factor on our industry and clients' projects until 2020 and beyond. The increasing cost of skilled labor will likely continue and drive project labor costs to all time highs.

While the overall construction economy is strong, there have been mixed predictions about the industry going into 2019. One industry leading economist forecasts another strong year for construction sector performance, yet warns about inflationary pressures. Job growth, high backlog and healthy infrastructure investment all spell good news for the industry.

The U.S. office market posted solid net absorption levels in the second and third quarters of 2018 of 18.0 million and 11.0 million square feet, respectively. This level of new leasing is likely due to higher-than-expected economic growth and the subsequent demand brought about by jobs created in the office-using sectors. This increase in demand is a factor in the increase in office construction activity in North Carolina and South Carolina.
 
Every fall during Homecoming week, the Clemson community unites to build a home for a local family in need. The project, which is organized by Clemson University’s Habitat for Humanity chapter and supervised by the Pickens County Habitat for Humanity, marked its 25th year and 26th home in October 2018.
