So far 2018 is stacking up to be a busy year for construction companies. However, companies are finding it hard to attract millennials in construction. There are nearly a quarter of a million open construction jobs in the United States, but they’re finding it harder and harder to fill them. Another issue that the construction industry faces is most of the current laborers are in their 40’s or older. The lack of younger workers will make it difficult for the construction industry to fulfill project obligations.

Two site selection industry veterans, Lindsey Cannon and Sarah White have formed Quest Site Solutions. Both Cannon and White worked at site selection firm McCallum Sweeney Consulting. Quest, based in Greenville, SC,  will provide a full range of site selection and economic development services to companies seeking new locations, relocating existing operations, and considering competitive expansions or consolidations.

 
THS Constructors, Inc., Chairman Howard Suitt, announced that current President & COO, Dana Emberton, has been named the company’s new Chief Executive Officer.  Emberton has served THS Constructors as their President & COO for the last three years.  In that time the company has grown over 60% in revenues and 70% in employee growth.

The Carolinas AGC celebrated hard work, perseverance and achievement by paying tribute to six individuals -one of whom has left an incredible legacy on our industry. The five others are still paving the road for future leaders to follow. According to CAGC leadership, each Hall of Fame honoree embodies the skill, integrity and responsibility that Carolinas AGC and the Associated General Contractors stand for.
FMI Corporation announced the release of the 2018 AGC/FMI Risk Management Study. The research focused on contractors’ perceptions of risk and opinions on how the U.S. E&C industry will change in the coming years. Specifically, authors investigated what industry sectors and trades are most likely to undergo fundamental disruption; how businesses are innovating today and the top risks they face; and, ultimately, how these industry trends will impact E&C risk management in the future.

Team A M King, sponsored by Charlotte-based A M King, participated in the 24 Foundation‘s 17th Annual 24 Hours of Booty community cycling event to benefit cancer survivorship and patient programs. On the last Saturday in July, a total of 26 A M King employees, relatives, friends and clients joined the 1,112 riders and 134 walkers from 23 states on the hot and steamy Booty Loop, a 3-mile course through Charlotte’s Myers Park.

As Clemson University students begin another semester of classes, Dr. Joe Burgett is beginning his sixth year as an assistant professor in Clemson University’s Construction Science and Management Department. As the Spring 2018 semester came to a close, Dr. Burgett was presented with the 2018 Alumni Master Teacher Award for outstanding undergraduate classroom instruction. This prestigious award is presented to a single Clemson University faculty member each year, nominated by the student body and selected by the Student Alumni Council.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its members are launching a variety of initiatives to help address violence in schools through design. "Architects have a role to play in addressing school violence," said 2018 AIA President Carl Elefante, FAIA. "AIA is committed to working with stakeholders and officials to make schools safer while building the positive, nurturing, learning environments we all want for our children."

Prices for inputs to construction fell 0.2 percent in July but are 9.5 percent higher than a year ago, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released today. Nonresidential construction input prices fell 0.3 percent in July but are up 9.6 percent year over year. Softwood lumber prices are up 19.5 percent from July 2017, while iron and steel prices are up 13.4 percent.
