During SummerSTEM, 100 educators from WCPSS schools engage in hands-on experiences designed to bring real-world lessons to the classroom. North Carolina is the top-ranked state for economic growth potential in Business Facilities magazine’s 15th Annual Rankings Report. North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia topped the chart in Business Facilities’ annual growth potential ranking. Jack Rogers, editor in chief, noted that all three states have established highly diversified growth strategies and staked a claim to leadership in high-tech hubs.

CarolinaPower was honored as one of South Carolina’s Best Places to Work for the second year in a row by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce at an awards dinner and reception in Columbia on August 1, 2019.  This year CarolinaPower ranked No. 4 in the Large Employer category (250 or more U.S. employees). Crime is one of the most misunderstood commercial risks in the insurance industry today. There’s a tendency, especially among the owners of small-to-midsize businesses, to think of crime as a danger that exists outside the walls of their establishment. A new report from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) suggests that sustainable building practices, including those involving energy and water conservation as well as waste reduction, are increasingly being incorporated throughout the hotel sector to add value and provide a competitive edge to properties.

 
The City of Raleigh selected Messer Construction Co.'s Raleigh team to lead the construction of a new 60,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Law Enforcement Training Center (LETC) for the Raleigh Police Department. The new center will be located just north of the Raleigh Police Department’s current training facility, which is more than 30 years old and about 12,000 square feet.
A shortage of construction and logistics workers has increased the cost of construction for developers and hampered the expansion and profitability of warehouse and distribution centers. The NAIOP Research Foundation commissioned this report to explore some of the contributing factors to the workforce shortage and how the construction and logistics industries can improve worker recruitment, training, productivity and retention.

FMI Corporation, a leading provider of management consulting and investment banking services to the built environment, is pleased to announce the release of the 2019 Homebuilders Construction industry compensation data.
 
Construction input prices expanded 0.8% in July but are down 0.6% year-over-year, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Producer Price Index data released today. Nonresidential construction input prices also increased 0.8% for the month but have declined 0.3% on a year-ago basis.

New construction starts in June advanced 9% from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $832.7 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. The increase followed the 10% gain reported for May, as total construction starts continued to strengthen following April’s subdued performance.

Companies of all sizes and industry type tell us they are having trouble finding qualified employees to fill open positions. With a national unemployment rate of less than 4 percent–the lowest on record since 1970–it’s little wonder that employers here in North Carolina are struggling with the downside of an up economy.

When the job market has more open positions than there are people to fill those positions, HR managers may need to consider alternative recruitment strategies, including higher starting salaries and a relaxing of certain educational and accreditation standards.

Another alternative strategy has some HR experts encouraging employers to rethink their stance on background checks with regard to candidates with criminal histories.
