Spearheaded by NCCER and Build Your Future (BYF), the seventh annual Careers in Construction Month is in full swing this October. Forty states, including North Carolina and South Carolina, have filed proclamation requests making 2019 the highest participation ever for this nationwide observance. The celebration was launched to increase public awareness, inspire the next generation of construction craft professionals and make an impact on the perceptions of a career in construction.

GoundBreak Carolinas regularly features people who are making things happen in the construction industry. This week, we caught up with Aprille Bell with Dixon Hughes Goodman. She is the Office Managing Partner in Dixon Hughes Goodman's Winston-Salem, NC office. Aprille joined the firm in 1991 and is responsible for maintaining client relationships, supervising audit engagement teams and resolving audit, accounting and financial reporting matters. She focuses on the construction and education industries. 
 
 
Carolinas AGC was recently named the AGC of America Chapter of the Year in the large/over $2.5M category.  AGC President Dirk Elsperman presented the distinguished award to CAGC President and CEO Dave Simpson and CAGC Executive Committee Members Paul Mashburn, Casey Schwager, Charlie Wilson and Mark Johnnie during the 2019 National and Chapter Leadership Conference.
 
 
Newly registered electricians were lauded by their employer, course instructors and industry peers at a private graduation ceremony in Greenville, S.C., on Friday, September 6, 2019. The celebration recognized the group’s successful completion of a rigorous four-year, electrical apprenticeship program registered with the S.C. Department of Labor.
 
 
NAWIC-Columbia installed its 2019/2020 board of directors on October 1, 2019. These individuals, who volunteer a significant amount of time and resources, provide leadership and vision that allows the Chapter to grow and succeed.

Fluor recently announced significant changes as the result of its strategic review and operational review. The sale of assets, reductions in staff and closing of offices has led to much speculation about the future of Fluor's 2,000 plus employees in Greenville, S.C.
OSHA announced that it has recently implemented the OSHA Weighting System (OWS) for fiscal year (FY) 2020. OWS will encourage the appropriate allocation of resources to support OSHA’s balanced approach of promoting safe and healthy workplaces, and continue to develop and support a management system that focuses enforcement activities on critical and strategic areas where the agency’s efforts can have the most impact.
 
The Atlantic Coast Pipeline is a critical infrastructure project jointly developed by Dominion Energy, Duke Energy and Southern Company that would bring much-needed natural gas supplies to the Southeast, as well as economic growth in rural areas of the region. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the Atlantic Coast Pipeline’s appeal of the Appalachian Trail decision.
