Gary Olnowich is the founder and CEO of Charlotte-based Catalyst Construction Company, a design-build general contractor with focus on the Carolinas. Catalyst is also licensed in Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee.  Olnowich has over 40 years in the construction industry. He started in the business when he was young, and was running crews by the time he was a teenager. His wife Karen Yoder is an integral part of Catalyst, complementing him well with her own set of skills.

The last legislative session in South Carolina saw a change in South Carolina’s contractor licensing laws. South Carolina has five different general contractor licensing groups. Each license group is determinative of the dollar value of work that a general contractor could perform and each with its own net worth requirement ranging from $10,000 to $250,000. South Carolina also has had five different mechanical contractor licensing groups. Each license group is determinative of the dollar value of work that a mechanical contractor could perform and each with its own net worth requirement ranging from $3,500 to $200,000.
 
Carolinas AGC (CAGC) bestowed the 2018 Pinnacle Awards to five construction projects which enhance their communities. A sixth Pinnacle, the "Build with the Best" award, was given to an individual who spent his career assisting the construction industry. The Pinnacle presentation was made on January 26 at CAGC's Annual Convention in Charleston, S.C.

Construction employment expanded by 52,000 net new jobs in January, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Industry employment is up by 338,000 net jobs on a yearly basis, which represents an increase of 4.7 percent. Nonresidential construction employment grew by 28,600 net new positions on a monthly basis, although the nonresidential building subsector lost 800 net positions.

A new report from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) details how educational architecture programs are reaching underrepresented students in K-8 classrooms.  AIA’s K-8 Learning by Design Chapter Grants seek to introduce the architecture profession among underrepresented students in K-8 classrooms.  Each program — created by AIA chapters — engages students and their families through hands-on architecture experiences.
 
NCCER has released a new superintendent assessment and is partnering with FMI to offer a joint certification to qualified professionals in the superintendent field. The assessment was developed in conjunction with subject matter experts for professionals whose primary role is to oversee the operations of a construction site from planning to completion.

The Carolinas Chapter of the Geo-Institute is pleased to announce the second GeoCarolinas Conference. The event will take place March 4 and 5, 2019 at the UNC Charlotte Center City in Charlotte, N.C., and will include state-of-the art technical presentations by leaders in the field of geotechnical engineering, interaction with 24 industry leading exhibitors, as well as an evening reception overlooking Charlotte’s skyline. New to the conference this year will be a Student Poster Session that takes place prior to the reception. This session will feature ongoing research from NC State, Clemson University, UNC Charlotte, USC, NC A&T, and The Citadel.
