The Carolinas AGC (CAGC) Foundation’s Build Your Career (BYC) initiative co-hosted a “Re-Entry Career Fair” in Columbia, S.C. with the REEMERGE prison reintegration program. This event was strategically designed to assist formerly incarcerated individuals find gainful employment with local employers to facilitate a successful “life beyond the fence” transition for these folks. Based in the Midlands region of South Carolina, REEMERGE is a reintegration and employment placement program for the formerly incarcerated, in direct affiliation with SC Works with grant funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The 6 to 12-month comprehensive REEMERGE program uses coaching and mentoring, education, employment and entrepreneurship to assist individuals transitioning from the penal system back into mainstream society.

The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of the Carolinas will be holding their 2019 Summer Convention in Greenville, SC, August 7-9, 2019. The convention will be held downtown at the Hyatt Regency and will feature educational sessions, networking events, and other activities. Featured speakers include Greenville Mayor Knox White and ABC National President and CEO Mike Bellaman.

 
East Carolina University recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Life Sciences and Biotechnology building. The $90 million project is expected to be completed by August 2021.

South Carolina was well represented at the SkillsUSA Championship event. Eleven students from the Palmetto State recently competed in the SkillsUSA Championships in Louisville, KY. During this competition, more than 6,400 outstanding career and technical education students — all state contest winners — competed hands-on in 103 different trade, technical, and leadership fields.

 
The Carolinas AGC Foundation Scholarship program was put into place to assist individuals studying for careers in the construction industry as well as those wishing to advance their skills and knowledge to further their construction careers. For 2019, the scholarship committee had many great candidates.
A shortage of construction and logistics workers has increased the cost of construction for developers and hampered the expansion and profitability of warehouse and distribution centers. The NAIOP Research Foundation commissioned this report to explore some of the contributing factors to the workforce shortage and how the construction and logistics industries can improve worker recruitment, training, productivity and retention.

Demand for co-working spaces is expected to show continued strong growth over the next few years, as more younger workers favor flexible office space over traditional office settings, according to BBG, a leading commercial real estate due diligence firm.
