Last month, GroundBreak Carolinas asked our readers for their thoughts on 2018. While your feedback was generally positive, there were some very interesting comments. Congress recently passed the most significant tax reform legislation since 1986. The tax reform legislation will have a positive impact on architecture, design and construction companies in North Carolina and South Carolina as key provisions of the legislation will converge to drive business investment, employment and wages.
 
Seventy-five percent of construction firms plan to expand their payrolls in 2018 as contractors are optimistic that economic conditions will remain strong as tax rates and regulatory burdens fall, according to survey results released by the AGC and Sage Construction and Real Estate. The findings can be found in Expecting Growth to Continue: The 2018 Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook.

The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of the Carolinas recently announced their schedule for 2018 events, programs, socials and training.
"In 2018, ABC events will provide a unique opportunity for members to be directly involved with all aspects of the chapter's success," said Michelle Lewter, ABC of the Carolinas Vice President. "ABC staff has worked diligently to ensure each ABC event offers something of value to its members in 2018"
The Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) of South Carolina will be holding a Statewide Initiative on January 18 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC.  The program features a range of speakers on topics including tax reform, human resources, and economic development.
 
The South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance (SCMA) announced that Sara Hazzard has been named President and CEO of the organization effective January 1, 2018.

“We are excited to welcome Sara Hazzard as the new President and CEO of the SCMA,” said Kurt Dallas, Executive Vice President of AFL and SCMA Chairman. “Her extensive experience in government relations, public affairs, and business will serve our organization well as we continue to advance pro-manufacturing issues.”
 
Recent gains in demand for infill development and other factors associated with community accessibility appear to be moderating. Showing signs of market saturation, demand for walkable neighborhoods, multi-generational housing and access to public transportation remain very strong, but growth has leveled off, according to the findings from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey for the third quarter of 2017, which focuses on community and neighborhood design.
The Carolinas Associated General Contractors (CAGC), an organization representing construction firms in North Carolina and South Carolina, recently announced their 2018 Board of Directors. J. Paul Mashburn with Mashburn Construction Company in Columbia, SC was named as 2018 Chairman.
