Purple Heart Homes and Charlotte television station FOX 46 teamed up this fall to build a home for Angela Cherico, an honorably discharged veteran and North Carolina native who had fallen on hard times. The Carolina community rallied together to support the construction of Angela’s future home in Denver, N.C., located about 25 miles north of Charlotte.

Wayne Brothers, headquartered in Davidson, N.C., heard the call for help and donated roughly 50 cubic yards of concrete and 200 man-hours to place and finish the concrete foundation. Wayne Brothers also engaged its client, Carocon, to donate blocks, sand, and mortar for the masonry foundation.

On Thursday, November 8, 2018, AIA Charlotte hosted the 2018 Design & Service Awards Gala at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. Fourteen projects received awards. Design projects were selected by a jury of architects from Tennessee, chaired by John L. Sanders, FAIA, of Sanders Pace Architecture.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is releasing 13 new and updated contract documents today that will assist architects and contractors with protecting their projects and businesses. "The AIA Documents Committee routinely reviews its legal agreements to ensure they reflect the latest trends and nuances we’re seeing in the industry," said AIA Contract Documents & Risk Management Managing Director Kenneth Cobleigh, Esq. "By doing so, we ensure the design and construction industries are working under the best agreements possible for their businesses."
Construction prices rose 0.5 percent in October and are 7.9 percent high than at the same time a year ago, according to an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index data conducted by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Prices for nonresidential construction inputs also increased 0.5 percent on a month-over-month basis and are up by more than 8 percent on a year-over-year basis.
 
Internet of Things is not a futuristic concept. Many homeowners boast of their homes as smart homes with appliances and devices connected to the internet. While many do not view the construction industry as technologically advanced, the IoT in construction is not as far off as we think. It is something that is achievable for many contractors. Having supported hundreds of facility and infrastructure projects along the East Coast, Burns & McDonnell is expanding operations with a new office in Greenville, SC. The employee-owned engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting firm plans to hire 50 local employees for the office within the next three years.
