In a style similar to "National Signing Day" events for high school student athletes, seniors at hundreds of schools across the nation were seated behind a table in front of a room of parents, teachers, peers and local/national media on May 8, 2019. The occasion — the inaugural National Signing Day for Construction Trades presented by SkillsUSA and Klein Tools.
 
The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying is relocating its headquarters to Greenville, S.C., from its current location in nearby Seneca. NCEES’ new headquarters will occupy 70,600 square feet at 200 Verdae Boulevard in Greenville.

As part of an ongoing partnership with Charleston Metro Chamber, Associated Builders and Contractors Carolinas Chapter held its second annual Build a SHED competition — an ABC Carolinas "Students Hands-On Experience Day" program. The objective of this competition is to promote interest in construction-related careers through experiential learning. Once again ABC Carolinas Chapter and Charleston Metro Chamber engaged their members to serve as mentors and judges to the six teams from local high schools and one team from Eckerd Connects career-ready youth.

The NCWorks Commission approved a new two-year strategic plan and certified local Career Centers while meeting at the Hotel Ballast in Wilmington on May 15. The strategic plan, entitled "Preparing North Carolina’s Workforce for Today and Tomorrow," is aligned with Governor Roy Cooper’s "NC Job Ready" initiative.

 
I May is Mental Health Awareness Month which is why there are more company posts dedicated to it, but not many focus on mental health in construction. The construction industry workers are not immune, and also experience mental health hiccups and sometimes long term illness. It’s important to raise awareness to issues within the industry and potential solutions to improve worker health and safety.

The South Carolina Economic Developers’ Association (SCEDA) announced its 2019-20 officers and board of directors during the organization’s annual conference in Myrtle Beach. Andrena Powell-Baker, SCCED, Senior Manager of Community Relations and Development at Lockhart Power Company, will serve as the 2019-2020 SCEDA president.

Sixty-seven percent of highway contractors report that motor vehicles had crashed into their construction work zones during the past year, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America. In response, association officials have launched a new radio and media campaign urging drivers to slow down and remain alert in highway work zones.
 
Following a sizable decrease in demand for design services in March, the April Architecture Billings Index (ABI) climbed back into positive territory according to a new report from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).
