Clemson CSM Symposium Addresses Industry Challenges
by Joan Krause, GroundBreak Carolinas
The second Annual Clemson University Construction Industry Symposium presented by Clemson's Department of Construction Science and Management (CSM) was held in Greenville, S.C. on October 12. "The Ever-Changing World of Construction: Today's Challenges, Tomorrow's Opportunities" was the theme for the Symposium that drew facility owners, construction companies, specialty contractors, designers, vendors and other construction industry service providers. As official Media Sponsor, GroundBreak Carolinas is pleased to share exclusive content from some speakers and panelists featured at the Symposium.

Exclusive Clemson CSM Symposium Content

Kermit Baker, PH.D., chief economist for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for more than 20 years, kicked-off the morning session at Clemson University's Second Annual Symposium for the construction industry with the morning's keynote session, titled "Construction Outlook: Challenges and Opportunities." Dr. Baker provided a comprehensive overview of the economic issues and trends impacting the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry — with special emphasis on the Southeast region. GroundBreak Carolinas sat down with Dr. Baker.
GroundBreak Carolinas recently sat down with Clemson University's N. Mike Jackson, Ph.D., P.E., Construction Science and Management (CSM) department chair and professor, to learn more about the "why's" behind this fall's Second Annual Symposium for the design and construction industry as well as his vision for the future of Clemson's CSM program. We also spent some time getting to know Dr. Jackson, who relocated to Clemson this summer from Statesboro, Ga., after four years as Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management at Georgia Southern University.
Regional Experts Discuss "The Diversity Challenge"
by Joan Krause, GroundBreak Carolinas
"The Diversity Challenge" was the focus of an interactive morning panel discussion during the Symposium. Two well-respected individuals from our region —  both with years of experience in the construction industry — shared their own unique perspectives on the subject, providing advice and guidance based on first-hand knowledge and personal experiences. Brief remarks by both panelists were followed by an open discussion with the audience with plenty of time for questions and answers.
The Basics of WELL Building
by Carolyn Rickard-Brideau, AIA, LEEP AP BD+C, WELL AP (Provisional), Little
What if I told you that your health can be positively — or negatively — impacted by spaces in which you spend your time? Would you seek out spaces that have a positive effect on your health and productivity, and avoid those with negative effects? Our bodies respond to cues in our environment, beyond our conscious awareness, and much of what is designed and built today is giving our systems the wrong messages.
Have you ever wished that you could "get inside an Owner's head?" Symposium attendees had the unique opportunity to do so. Two construction professionals from the Carolinas — Clay Addison and Jon Papps — provided insight from an Owner's point of view during an interactive afternoon  panel discussion  titled, "Owners' Expectations of Their Selected Design & Construction Teams." After brief remarks by these "Owner's representatives," the session will become an open forum with ample time for audience members to ask questions.
