President Trump officially released a proposal for a $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan. The proposed plan includes $200 billion in funding from the federal government. Unlike recent infrastructure plans, half of the federal seed money is planned to go toward an incentive program to match funding and financing from state and local governments that invest in rebuilding projects. In addition, the program calls for block grants to states to be used for rural projects. Industry leaders from North Carolina and South Carolina react to the proposal.

Several industry surveys and reports forecast continued growth in the construction industry. Albeit, the growth shows a modest 4.8% increase, different from the double-digit growth in previous years. Regardless, there is still a general sense of optimism. With continued growth and positive outlook in the construction industry, what can possibly be keeping construction executives up at night? At the Carolinas AGC (CAGC) 97th Annual Convention in early February 2018 in Boca Raton, Florida, strong support for construction workforce development instigated a spontaneous and very generous donation contest. Thirty-five individuals and CAGC member firms donated over $30,000 in just three days — a testament to the support our industry demonstrates to help solve the workforce shortage issue in North and South Carolina.
 
Overall construction input prices increased 1.1 percent in January, reversing a slight decline in December 2017. Compared to this time last year, overall construction materials prices are up 4.9 percent. Nonresidential construction materials prices are up 4.7 percent year over year and up 1 percent on a monthly basis.

The winner of this year’s ABC Carolinas Roger Liska Annual Grant-in-Aid Award was Kyle Morrison. Dr. Mike Jackson, Department Chair and Professor, presented Kyle with the award during the luncheon held in conjunction with the Clemson Construction Science Management Industry Advisory Board meeting.
