While discussing the importance of building a safety program beyond a written manual, our series focuses on the need for a Safety Management System (SMS) while exploring common SMS components. Safety Management Systems are a collection of efforts, programs, and strategies that work together to keep your team safe – they look beyond written words and into corporate action. Most importantly, they look beyond compliance and into best practice. We previously noted the National Safety Council’s Nine Elements as a collection of common SMS principles. In this article, we will discuss the fourth element in this collection – Hazard Recognition, Evaluation, and Control. This element recognizes that all injuries are preventable; that management is responsible for finding and fixing hazards proactively.

The S.C. Department of Commerce (S.C. Commerce) and S.C. Economic Developers’ Association (SCEDA) today announced that 49 state and community leaders have graduated from a statewide economic development training program, the S.C. Economic Development Institute (Institute).

"The Institute has long been a powerful tool in South Carolina’s economic development arsenal," said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt. "The success South Carolina has enjoyed in recent years can, in large part, be attributed to the remarkable amount of collaboration and teamwork that has taken place across this state. More than 7 million gallons of sewage spilled into Raleigh's streams and tributaries last week. This chilling occurrence underscores the need for more public funding to adequately address the importance of keeping pace with water, sewer and other infrastructure needs throughout the Carolinas, according to CAGC. "More focus needs to be placed on repairing our water and sewer lines, as well as all public infrastructure needs, at a time when they are not being adequately addressed throughout the Carolinas and our nation," said Dave Simpson, President & CEO of Carolinas AGC.
Several cities and regions in North Carolina and South Carolina submitted responses for one of the largest economic development projects in history. The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAOIP) recently posted a viewpoint article about Amazon's decision to select New York and Virginia as the locations for its HQ2.
For the fourth consecutive year, North Carolina ranks as the No. 2 state to do business, according to Site Selection magazine. North Carolina scored a total of 99 points across all categories in the 2018 Top State Business Climate Rankings, just two points behind top-ranked Georgia with 101 points. Rounding out the top five spots in the ranking are Texas, 90 points; Ohio, 89; and Tennessee and South Carolina tied at 88.

Forty-seven percent of those participating in the World Green Building Trends 2018 SmartMarket Report expect to do the majority of their projects (more than 60%) green by 2021. Published by Dodge Data & Analytics, the new industry report indicates that the international market for green construction projects has grown significantly in the last 10 years and demand for green building activity is poised to grow – to even double in some regions. In fact, the report found a 20-point projected jump from those who currently report a majority of green projects.
